Class 411 4-CEPs 1550 & 1517 leave Dover on 11 May 1996 with the 10:16 Ramsgate to Charing Cross service. Originally this section of line at the base of Shakespeare Cliff was carried across the beach on a wooden trestle viaduct. In 1927 the embankment seen here was created. Amazingly, the wooden viaduct was not removed, but merely buried! For nearly 90 years trains like this one have been crossing the buried and infilled structure without any problems. However, in 2015 sea damage caused holes to start appearing, so the whole lot was excavated, and new concrete piling installed. The work was so extensive that the line was closed for nearly two years. |
