Class 401 2-BIL 2090 leads Class 405 4-SUB 4732 through Winchfield station on 27 September 1987, with a Woking to Basingstoke shuttle service in connection with the Basingstoke Rail Show. By far the oldest electric unit operating on the UK mainland national network at the time, albeit limited to specials such as this, this National Railway Museum owned 1930s built unit looks positively antique even compared to the more recent (1950) 4-SUB unit it is coupled to. The photographer on the platform is having to make a quick sprint for his train after photographing the special! |
