Straight out of the box! Brand new 221102 passes Engine Common on 29 March 2002 with a southbound test run. With not a mark on the immaculate paintwork, it seems likely that this is its first outing on the mainline. Although the similar Class 220s had been in service for a few months when this picture was taken, the first Class 221 didn't enter passenger service until a few weeks later.
