Class 432 4-REP 3002 leads the 08:28 Weymouth to Waterloo service past Worting Junction on 24 May 1986. Unfortunately I have only got a couple of decent pictures of these ultra powerful EMUs, and the other one was taken on the same occasion, just half an hour later. With 3200hp available, these units were almost as powerful as the legendary Deltics, but got nowhere near the attention from photographers. They had a maximum speed of 90mph, which was often exceeded, and indeed BR conducted trails in the 1970s with a view to increasing the maximum permitted speed to 100mph. The only thing that stopped this happening, was that the brakes wouldn't be able to cope with the extra speed! |
