319060 leaves St Albans station on 3 January 1990 with the 12:56 Luton to Purley Network SouthEast service. The boarded up and vandalised signal box looks like it is living on borrowed time, but in fact it survives today, and in much better condition. After the box closed in 1980, it got progressively more derelict, until a local group was formed in 2002 to preserve it. It has now been superbly restored, complete with operating frame, and is periodically open to visitors. |
