33103 passes Mintlyn on 21 November 1998 with the Pathfinder Tours 1Z73 14:10 Ely to Crewe 'Crompton Pedigree' railtour. Top'n'tail loco 37242 can be seen on the rear of the train. This is the view from the King's Lynn bypass, and shows the tour returning from Middleton Towers, a mile in the distance. This was formerly the King's Lynn to East Dereham line, part of the once extensive network of cross country secondary lines in Norfolk. It was built by the Lynn & Dereham Railway Company, and opened in 1846. With the exception of the short section to the sand terminal at Middleton Towers, the line closed in 1968. In the background of this view is the embankment of the former Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway's Peterborough to Great Yarmouth line, which closed in 1959. Mintlyn is a deserted medieval village. Apart from Mintlyn Farm, the only evidence is the remains of a ruined church, situated a little to the left of this picture. |
