Preceded by a railman with a red flag, 37422 very cautiously approaches Bentley Colliery on 6 March 1993 with the Pathfinder Tours 1Z39 06:05 Manchester Piccadilly to Bentley Colliery 'Coker Coaler' railtour. The colliery closed later that year, and this area has been landscaped as Bentley Community Woodland. About the only things in this picture that survives today are the pylons in the background, and the catenary of the East Coast Mainline, which can also just be seen in the background. Thorpe Marsh Power Station which dominates the background was closed in 1994, and the cooling towers and chimneys demolished. |
