Just four days after being named Top of the Pops, 43002 passes Hungerford Common on 3 September 1984 with the 1A73 05:07 Penzance to Paddington 'Golden Hind'. There was some controversy at the time that a loco was being named after a popular TV programme, but strangely nobody was bothered by who actually maned it - Jimmy Savile! The old Hungerford Hospital (originally the Hungerford and Ramsbury Workhouse) can be seen in the background. This was demolished in the late 1990s, leaving only the small chapel that can be seen on the right. |
