Following the failure of the 1A40 21:45 Penzance to Paddington GWR sleeper near Ivybridge on 17 October 2019, most unusually a pair of HST power cars were used to take the stock to Reading the following day. So here we have the bizarre sight of 43040 & 43198 Driver Stan Martin 25 June 1950 - 6 November 2004 towing failed 57605 Totnes Castle and the sleeper stock past Uffington on 18 October 2019, running as the 5Z70 10:35 Laira to Reading Traincare Depot ECS. This was running exactly to time, and although it was fairly bright, it unfortunately missed the sun by just a few seconds. Had the early running before Swindon continued, it would most likely have passed in full sun. However, at least it wasn't raining, and this would be worth photographing in any light!
