The sheep and lambs take no notice, as buffer fitted 43123 passes Hampton Gay on 4 May 1995 with the 1M41 17:16 Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly service. Amazingly, although this was a weekday, and the time was only 19:35, this was the last northbound cross country train on the line at the time. The last rays of the setting sun are illuminated the tower of Hampton Gay church, which together with a ruined manor house and a farm, are all that remains of the former village. The undulations in the foreground field may indicate where the deserted medieval village once was, the more extensive earthworks in the field on the other side of the line definitely do. |
