43126 passes the disused signal box at Exminster on 16 September 1990 with the 1A70 16:20 Paignton to Paddington 'Torbay Express'. The signal box stands well back from the running lines, as there were formerly a pair of widely spaced loops here, and until 1964, a station. Just visible in the background, on the extreme left of the picture, is the Turf Hotel, which was built in 1827 at the point where the Exeter Canal joins the River Exe. The hotel was built to provide accommodation for the lock keeper and the crews and horses of boats working the canal. |
