Electfrication obviously has its benefits, but no other form of railway 'improvement' has such a catastrophic affect on the environment. Broad gauge changed to standard gauge, steam gave way to diesel, and HSTs took over from loco hauled trains, but still the Great Western Mainline had a minimal impact on the landscape.
