43150 approaches Walton Well Road, Oxford, on 23 August 1985 with the 1B24 10:10 Paddington to Great Malvern service. Virtually everything in this picture has changed, and not for the better! 30 years later 43150 is still going strong, although sadly no longer in the stylish original InterCity 125 livery. What has really changed is the background. The waste ground and allotments have been replaced by a hideous tenement block of student flats, that has been universally condemned as an eyesore. Gone too is the old water tower on the site of Oxford depot, which in 1985 was still used for the stabling of locomotives. Note also the rakes of coaches in the carriage sidings, as this was the era when Oxford commuters had the luxury of proper loco hauled trains to London, rather than overcrowded DMUs. |
