A4 4-6-2 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley catches the last of the evening light, as it climbs the gradient towards Ardley Tunnel on the Chiltern Line, with the Stratford-upon-Avon to Marylebone 'Shakespeare Limited' railtour on 11 September 1988. Just visible on the original Kodachrome slide, just above the locomotive's exhaust, are a couple of cranes employed on the construction of the M40 motorway, which finally opened as a through route from London to Birmingham in January 1991.
