An unusual, and slightly puzzling picture taken at South Moreton (Didcot East) on 16 November 1988. 47508 S.S. Great Britain heads westwards with a rake of four wheel TTA oil tanks, a train which does not match up with anything in the working timetable. Possibly an oil train to Littlemore, but at the time the 'as required' service to Littlemore came from Stanlow. An InterCity Mainline liveried Class 47/4 is also noteworthy on an oil train. To add to the weirdness, the loco is quite clearly sporting freshly applied 'smiley face' markings on its silver buffers. Presumably it had been spruced up for some special event, but I can find no mention of it, and have yet to come across another picture of it with buffers in this condition. Any information would be gratefully appreciated. |
