47511 Thames passes Lyneham on 31 October 1981 with the 1B58 10:50 Paddington to Worcester Shrub Hill service. Just visible on the skyline (on both sides of the train) are the masts of Leafield Radio Station. With approximately 80 tall masts, the station was a distinctive landmark for miles around. Originally built in 1912 with Poulsen arc transmitters, the station was converted to conventional transmitters when spark gap and arc transmitters were banned in the 1920s. The station remained in use by the Post Office until 1986. The masts were then demolished. |
