47603 County of Somerset heads north from Oxford, and approaches Walton Well Road on 7 April 1990 with the 1E35 09:00 Poole to Newcastle 'Northumbrian'. In the foreground are the bridges over the Castle Mill Stream (a backwater of the River Thames). The bridge in use was built by the Great Western Railway, while the disused one in the foreground was built by the London & North Western Railway, and marks the course of that company's line into Oxford Rewley Road station. On the extreme right of this picture is the gate at which I watched Sir Winston Churchill's funeral train pass by on its way to Hanborough on 30 January 1965. |
