50006 Neptune heads east along the Great Western Mainline near Baulking on 21 June 1980 with the 1A01 08:31 Cheltenham to Paddington service. Despite appearances, this is taken from a public footpath crossing. Despite the poor quality (Praktica PLC2), I have included this view as it shows Neptune in its recently refurbished condition, with a blanking plate where the central headlight would later be positioned. Note also the line of dead elm trees in the background, a legacy of the Dutch Elm Disease outbreak of the 1970s.
