50008 Thunderer waits at Oxford station on 21 October 1988. It has just arrived from the up carriage sidings and will shortly be working the 1F71 16:00 Oxford to Paddington Network SouthEast service. This view shows Oxford station after the 1971 modernisation, which saw the construction of a range of flimsy wooden buildings on the up platform, hardly better than the ramshackle GWR buildings they replaced. The canopy above the first three coaches dates from this time, while in the background can be seen the truncated remains of the original Great Western canopy. In 1990 the station was rebuilt again, this time with a footbridge replacing the former subway. |
