Not quite a perfect reflection, but not a bad picture nonetheless. 50010 Monarch passes the fishermen on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Crofton with the 1C29 11:00 Paddington to Paignton service on 23 September 1986. Monarch was one of a handful of Class 50s that always seemed to elude me, and I only have a few pictures of it. This was the last time I saw it, despite it remaining in service for nearly another two years. Unfortunately it suffered an engine failure whilst hauling the 11:50 Glasgow to Plymouth train near Bromsgrove on 30 July 1988, and was towed to Laira the following day. There it languished for several years, before finally being cut up on site by staff from Coopers Metals, Cardiff. |
