50046 Ajax passes the redundant signal box at Exminster on 22 April 1988 with the 1F84 16:21 Plymouth to Bristol Temple Meads service. Owing to there being an abundance of Class 50 workings in the Oxford area during the 1980s, I never made the effort to travel to the West Country to photograph these locos on the numerous local workings using short rakes of coaches. The exception that proves the rule is this picture of Ajax with a ridiculously short load of five Mk1 coaches plus a GUV. Ironically, the very next day I saw it back on my own local Cotswold Line!
