50049 & 50001 Oxford 24 March 1984

Very nearly a picture of the first and last built Class 50s! 50049 Defiance (the final loco to be built) stands next to 50001 Dreadnought (the second loco to be built) at Oxford in the pouring rain on 24 March 1984. As D401, 50001 entered service on 9 December 1967, while D449 (50049) completed the class just over a year later on 11 December 1968. In this view Defiance has just arrived with the 1S61 06:45 Paddington to Glasgow Central, which it worked as far as Birmingham New Street, while Dreadnought waits on the centre road to head north light engine.
