One of the highlights of the West Somerset Railway's 1995 Autumn Diesel Gala was the pairing of 50149 Defiance & 40145 on the Saturday 30 September 13:50 Norton Fitzwarren to Minehead service. This pair of classic English Electric machines are pictured passing Roebuck Farm in the rain. Prior to its return to mainline duties, 50049 was cosmetically restored to its former guise as Railfreight experiment 50149. Both these locos feature basically the same engine, although a decade of development has seen the Class 40's 2000hp increase by 700hp in the Class 50. The later design is also approximately 18 tons lighter and dispenses with the leading pony wheel on each bogie.
