With a departure time like that it is obvious why this train had to be photographed in high summer. Luckily the area around the oil depot is relatively free of obstructions, so the very low sun at that time in the evening is not a problem. A decade later in 2008, the train departs several hours earlier, giving more choices of photographic location en-route, although obviously it is more backlit when it leaves Westerleigh.
