60059 Samuel Plimsoll heads north from Banbury on 17 May 1993 with the 6E53 16:05 Didcot Power Station to Worksop MGR empties. Crossing the bridge is a reminder of Banbury's once famous local industry. The Northern Aluminium Co opened a factory at Banbury in 1931, and it became a major employer in the town. The company was trading as British Alcan Extrusions during the 1980s and 1990s, but after yet another takeover in 1996, the Banbury plant was closed in 2007. |
