In 2023 it makes a change for me to photograph one of these Class 701 EMUs actually working on the third rail, rather than being towed to Long Marston for storage! 701053 passes Old Basing on 16 June 2023 with the 5Q50 06:12 Eastleigh to Waterloo mileage accumulation test run. Four years after their planned introduction into service, and none of the class have yet carried any fare paying passengers. The 1T26 07:54 Portsmouth Harbour to Waterloo South Western Railway service can be seen approaching in the background.
