D444 Exeter (50044) catches the early morning sun as it passes Tackley with the 1Z50 05:26 Bristol Temple Meads to Aberystwyth 'Cambrian Mountaineer' railtour on 9 May 2009. This tour was run by Spitfire Railtours and The Network Rail Bristol Operations and Swindon Integrated Control Centre Three Peaks Teams in connection with the Railway Children charity. There was no doubt whatsoever as to what type of loco was approaching as I stood at this remote location in the Cherwell Valley. In the still morning air the once familiar Class 50 throb could be heard while the train was still several miles away, and then came the distinctive hesitant two tone horn as the train approached Tackley station, which was still over a mile away! Although I have numerous Class 50 pictures in the area from the 1980s, I certainly haven't got a two tone green machine on maroon coaches! |
