The signal on the left protects the swing bridge over the River Ouse, which is a short distance around the corner to the right. Although very infrequently used nowadays, there are still occasions when rail services face an unexpected delay while a large ship passes through. It is just as well there isn't more river traffic, as there can be a significant wait, as the whole opening and closing process is rather protracted.
